The collection includes records, 1775-1843, of the Goose Creek Baptist Church in Upperville; minutes, 1917-1932, of the Lake Clan; payroll, 1860, of Captain Turner Ashby's company (Mountain Rangers, later of the 7th Va. Cavalry); portfolio of notes and compilations on Fauquier County and Marshall, Va.; and Robert Combs' declaration for a Revolutionary War pension. Collection also includes "A History of the Heiner Family," of Kittanning, Pa., by D. B. Heiner, as well as Gott family genealogical data.

John Singleton Mosby (1833-1916) of Powhatan County, Va., was a lawyer and Confederate officer. Mosby was educated at the University of Virginia and worked as a lawyer in Washington County, Va., prior to the Civil War. In 1861, Mosby enlisted in the 1st Virginia Cavalry. Sands, B. F. (Benjamin Franklin), 1811-1883

B.F. Sands served as a navy lieutenant in the Mexican War, participating in operations on the Grijalva River under Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry. He later served in the Civil War and as director of the Naval Observatory, 1867-1874. Sands was made rear admiral in 1871, and he retired in 1874. He died in Washington, D.C., in 1883.
